FAQ

Where is Wan-Jun in Phantom Blade Zero?
At the Mandate Encampment, along the main path through the region. He is an optional encounter, so the region can be cleared without fighting him first.
How do I trigger the Wan-Jun fight?
He stands guard at the encampment itself — take the main Mandate Encampment path and the fight starts when you reach him. There is no arena to hunt for.
What is Wan-Jun's most dangerous attack?
His grab. When he throws his hand behind him and a red glint appears, dodge immediately — and treat any dirt blind as grab danger, because he reaches for it while your vision is blocked.
What does Wan-Jun drop?
Bashpole, a Phantom Edge that opens new paths around the world.

Getting there

Wan-Jun guards the Mandate Encampment itself. Take the main path through the region and the fight starts when you reach him — no detour, no prerequisite, no hidden arena. He is an optional encounter, so nothing stops you from clearing the rest of the area first and coming back at full strength.

How the fight plays

Wan-Jun is a massive hammer wielder whose body bears scars from Perfect Transcension. His bashpole can shatter stone and shake the ground with every blow, and the fight plays exactly like that description reads: heavy, committed swings that shake the arena and leave him exposed when they whiff.

Three habits decide the fight:

  • Dodge sideways when he flings dirt, so your vision never drops.
  • Punish the stumbles that end his ramming and spinning attacks.
  • Respect the grab — red glint means dodge, immediately.

Dodge sideways when he flings dirt

Several of his attacks fling dirt directly in front of him. If it connects, your vision is temporarily limited — and that is exactly when this fight goes wrong, because Wan-Jun keeps attacking while you are blinded and can slip in his deadliest move, the unblockable grab, during the same window.

The fix is in the geometry: the dirt lands directly in front of him, so a sideways dodge clears it cleanly. Dodge backwards and you risk eating both the dirt and whatever comes behind it.

Wait out the ram, then punish

When Wan-Jun charges at you with his weapon, do not trade into it. Wait the attack out and stay close on the third ram: he stumbles at the end of the move, and that stumble is your largest damage window of the fight. Every health bar of damage you deal should come from moments like this — let him miss, then collect the recovery.

Stay close during the spinning attack

When he starts spinning his weapon, the instinct is to back away. Stay close instead, and either block or dodge the individual hits. He stumbles at the end of this move too, so staying in range means you are already standing next to him when the free window opens — no sprint required.

The red-glint grab

Move Read
Grab He throws his hand behind him and a red glint flashes — dodge immediately

This is the move to watch out for. It is unblockable, and the tell is short: hand behind his back, red glint, dodge. There is no block answer here, so build the reflex early.

The grab is also what he reaches for while a dirt blind still clouds your vision, which is why the two mechanics feed each other. Treat every blind as grab danger until your view clears, and treat every red glint as a dodge order.

The two stumble windows

Move Shape Punish
Ramming charge Charges with his weapon, three rams total Stumbles after the third — stay close and unload
Spinning attack Spins his weapon, hits at close range Block or dodge the hits, then punish the stumble

Both windows come from letting him finish what he started. Patience is the whole plan: sidestep the dirt, survive the strings, and cash in when he stumbles.

Rewards

Bashpole — a Phantom Edge. Beyond the weapon itself, it opens new paths around the world, which makes this optional fight worth clearing before you finish exploring the rest of the map.

Notes

  • Dodge sideways, not backwards. The dirt lands directly in front of him.
  • Blinded means defensive. He keeps attacking, and the grab comes out during blinds.
  • Third ram ends in a stumble. Wait it out, stay close, punish.
  • The spin ends in a stumble too. Stay close and block or dodge the hits.
  • Red glint = dodge. The grab is unblockable and fast.
