Yuzan boss guide: bounce her orbs back and keep the pressure

Yuzan boss guide: bounce her orbs back and keep the pressure in-game character art

Yuzan's homing orbs can be batted back with a plain block — that is your main damage. Interrupt the AoE with daggers, dodge the sparks, watch the pull orbs.

FAQ

Where is Yuzan in Phantom Blade Zero?
Village of Lu, below the Three Puppets Well. Drop into the well and follow the path to the end. You need to have beaten Master Bi Yuan and Master Bi Hai first, and interacted with the remains fighting the giant puppet near the wreckage.
How do you damage Yuzan?
Two ways. Perfect-block her homing orbs so they bounce back into her, and keep melee pressure on — a high guard-break weapon can interrupt her wind-ups outright. Distance helps the orb reflect; the further the orbs travel back, the more they hurt her.
What are the red and blue sparks?
Wind-ups. A blue spark on the instrument, then a red one, each fires two lethal ranged slashes. Dodge on the spark, not on the slash.
What does Yuzan drop?
Heartend Pipa, the instrument weapon, plus story progression through Heartless Remnants.

Getting there

Clear Master Bi Yuan and Master Bi Hai first, and interact with the remains fighting the giant puppet by the wreckage. Then go back to the Three Puppets Well, drop in, and follow the path to the end.

She is a Puppet, which matters for loadout: anything built around bleed is dead weight here (same lesson as Hua).

The orb reflect is the damage plan

She hovers and plays, and glowing orbs rise and home in on you. Blocking them bounces them back into her, and each one that lands does real damage.

Two things follow from that:

  1. Guard is offence here. You are not blocking to survive, you are blocking to attack.
  2. Distance is damage. Step back before the orbs launch so they travel further on the return, and more of them connect.

This is her most common sequence, and she can also open with the charged shot. If the instrument is sparking red at the start, expect it immediately.

How to fight her

Interrupt the AoE

When a red and blue glow surrounds her and she plays into an AoE, do not stand in it. Step back and throw ranged daggers — that interrupts the sequence and forces her back into the orb pattern, which is the pattern you want because it is the one that damages her.

Read the sparks

Two wind-ups to learn:

  • Blue spark on the instrument, and she bends and walks backward.
  • Red spark immediately after.

Each spark fires two lethal ranged slashes. Dodge on the spark, not on the slash — the slashes come out fast enough that reacting to the blade is too late.

The pull orbs

When she summons orbs on the ground that pull, get to the arena edge immediately. They detonate, and being caught near them is a full combo of damage with no counterplay.

If you are already close when they appear, chain dodges outward rather than trying to fight through.

The red charge

When she wraps herself in red and charges, the wind-up is long and obvious. The answer is aggressive, not defensive: stay on her, and dodge through the moment the wind-up ends, then keep chasing. Backing off here just gives her the cast for free.

Gear

Slot Pick Why
Main weapon Outlaw Warblade Guard break interrupts her wind-ups; heals
Phantom Edge Ranged daggers Interrupts the AoE from outside it
Accessory Kuye Temple Prayer Beads Summons help with strong guard break
Not Bleed builds She is a Puppet; Bleed Gauge never fills

The Prayer Beads summon is close to a win condition here: the summon’s guard break is strong enough that, while it is alive, she spends most of the fight staggered.

Rewards

Heartend Pipa — the instrument weapon, and the base item for the Illusory Pipa upgrade chain later.

Notes

  • Block the orbs, do not dodge them. Dodging is the wrong answer and loses your damage.
  • Step back first so the return trip is longer.
  • The volley ends with a red shot. Do not heal into it.
  • Sparks, not slashes. Dodge on the spark.
  • Pull orbs = run to the edge. No heroics.
  • Red charge = push in, not back off.
